Firsts & Milestones

Every first,
remembered

Forty of the firsts parents actually want to keep are already waiting for you — first bath, first tooth, says “Mama”, first steps, counts to ten. Mark one the day it happens, or go back and crown a photo you took last week. And when a first is yours alone, type your own.

Forty firsts, already waiting

You never start from a blank page. BabySteps comes with forty of the firsts parents actually want to remember — first bath, first smile, rolls over, first tooth, says “Mama”, waves bye-bye, first steps, first haircut, uses the potty, counts to ten — from newborn all the way to three.

The Milestones screen has two sides. “Reached” gathers every first you've already captured; “To discover” shows the ones still ahead. It opens on whichever fits — your collection if there's something to look back on, the things to discover if you're just beginning.

Under “To discover”, the whole catalog sits in one open list grouped into seven age ranges, 0–3 months through 24–36, with no accordions to tap open. Each first carries a soft hue for the kind of growing it belongs to: terracotta for moving, rose for the social ones, violet for words, teal for everyday care, honey for the one-off firsts.

  • Browse a year ahead, or find one you forgot to record months ago
  • Firsts you’ve already captured quietly drop out of the list
  • All forty are written in English and German — and a first you logged months ago renames itself when you switch
  • Family invited to look rather than add can browse everything; the record buttons are simply hidden

Around now

Gently suggested, never overdue

Once your child's birthday is on file, the firsts typical for the age they are right now float to the top under “Around now”, each with a soft line underneath: “Babies often reach this around 6 months.” Often. Around. Nothing is ever framed as late, missed, or a deadline.

Those cards are drawn with a dashed outline rather than a solid one — visibly not yet. A first you haven't got to keeps waiting quietly for as long as it takes, and the day it happens it simply becomes a card like all the others.

  • Nothing on the Milestones screen keeps score — no progress bar, no percentage, no “12 of 40” to chase
  • Nothing compares one child to another, or to a norm
  • Suggestions wait for you to look — there are no reminders about firsts that haven’t happened
  • No birthday yet? A warm card invites you to add one, and the whole catalog stays open either way

Dashed, because it hasn't happened yet. Nothing here is ever marked late.

Marking a first

Crown a photo you already took

Firsts are usually only obvious in hindsight. Tap one and BabySteps asks how you'd like to remember it — link a moment already in your journal, or capture a new one right now. It never drops you straight into the camera.

Or start from the other end: open any moment already in the journal and choose “Mark as a first”. The whole catalog opens with a search box and age-grouped sections, the band matching your child's age already expanded and labelled “around now”, and every band carrying a quiet count of how many you've gathered there.

Whichever way you got there, it lands in the same place: “Reached” gathers every first you've captured, newest first, each card carrying its photo, its name and the date it happened.

  • Linking asks you to confirm, and warns you if that moment already marks a different first
  • One moment holds one first — a second one offers to replace it rather than quietly doubling up
  • Firsts already recorded stay in view with a sage checkmark, so you can see the collection filling in
  • “Something unique…” lets you type your own: “First time she said my name”, “First night in the new house”

In the story

The big ones catch your eye

A moment that marks a first doesn't just sit in the feed. It gets a framed, gallery-style card — a soft mat around the photo, a hairline frame in the first's own colour, and a little pill naming the first and how old your child was that day. Scrolling back through a year, the big ones stand out instead of blurring into everything else.

Open it and the name sits at the top in large type beside a gold star, with a soft sage badge underneath: “Reached on 14 March 2026”. The age is worked out from that child's own birthday, so in a family feed each sibling shows their own — and a child with no birthday on file simply shows no age rather than a wrong one.

The rest of it

Small kindnesses around a first

The details that keep firsts feeling like a keepsake shelf rather than a checklist to complete.

A first with no photo at all

Some firsts happen when the camera is nowhere near. Save one with nothing but its name — no photo, no caption, no voice note needed. The composer just shows “Logging a first” on a gold pill, and the card still wears it in the feed.

Nothing is filed permanently

Mislabelled the wobble as first steps? Remove the first from the moment's menu, or clear the gold pill while editing — and it goes straight back into “To discover”, waiting for the real one.

Just the firsts, when you want them

The timeline's filter sheet carries a “Milestones only” filter that hides everything else, and shows as a removable pill above the feed. It only appears once there's a first to show, so it never leads to an empty screen.

They turn up where you already look

Keepsakes carries a rail of your reached firsts to swipe through — and on a day with no “on this day” memory, a hero card names a first to watch for, picking whichever sits closest to that child's own age.

“A first! 🎉”

When someone in the family records one, everyone else gets a push: “Anna logged a new first for Mia.” It never says which first — that little surprise is saved for when you open the app.

Siblings keep their own

Chips at the top switch between children, and each one's reached firsts and suggestions are entirely theirs. A first recorded in a members-only moment stays with that audience — for everyone else, it's simply still to discover.
